How to Take the APE Out of Your Communication
This past week, body language and communication expert Steph Holloway, sent out her holiday message.
The idea that really grabbed my attention in her message was this quote:
Human beings run on A.P.E. Assumption, perception, and ego. Everything we say, everything we do is affected by these three things.
That sure makes a lot of sense to me, and I think it brilliantly sums up the challenges we frequently have in communicating with each other as humans.
Steph is the creator of a tool known as Compassionate Assertiveness. She says that it’s as much a tool for humanity as it is a set of questions.
Steph says, Compassionate Assertiveness:
One of the most compelling ideas that Steph shared with me in The Future of the Workplace was this:
I think this is a pretty powerful idea and one you’ve likely not heard before. There’s something about it that sticks with me.
Is there a formula for graciousness?
Here is Steph’s formula for graciousness:
Here a few of the many takeaways from my interview with Steph:
- Be compassionately assertive by looking for the win-win in situations rather than having to be the winner.
- Create an environment where people can ask the right questions.
- Graciousness is the ultimate tool and benchmark for getting the absolute best out of people.
- People get frustrated and stop contributing when knowing whatever they say won’t get actioned or heard.
- What do you bring to the table I don’t know about?
- Many people are frustrated because they have the solution but aren’t asked.
- Is there a reason we do it that way?
- It’s all about getting to the truth as quickly as possible.
There’s a lot more in the full interview, so I hope you will pick up a copy of The Future of the Workplace and discover more from Steph Holloway.
